What is brake horsepower (bhp)?

A crucial measure for performance vehicles – Brake horsepower (bhp) is a term used to measure the power output of an engine, motor or other power source and represents the amount of power an engine can deliver to the drive shaft or wheels. The higher the brake horsepower, the more power an engine can deliver.

What’s the difference between hp and bhp?

Although horsepower (hp) and brake horsepower (bhp) are both units of power used to measure the performance of engines, they are calculated in slightly different ways.

Horsepower represents the theoretical amount of power an engine produces at its crankshaft, before any power losses occur due to friction, heat, or other factors. It is calculated based on an engine’s torque and rotational speed (rpm) using the formula: horsepower = torque x rpm / 5252.

Brake horsepower (bhp), on the other hand is a practical measurement of power an engine delivers to the wheels or output shaft after taking into account power losses due to friction and other factors. Brake horsepower is generally considered a more accurate measure of an engine’s performance output.

How is brake horsepower (bhp) measured?

Brake horsepower is measured using a device called a dynamometer or “dyno” for short. A dyno measures the torque and rotational speed (rpm) of an engine by applying a load to the engine and measuring the force and speed required to overcome it. The resulting power output is the engine’s brake horsepower.
