Ever heard of the phrase “Bigger is Better”? Well, London’s ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) seems to be taking this quite seriously, as it prepares to expand its radius on 29th August.
With the much-anticipated ULEZ expansion around the corner, the buzz and discussions surrounding the Ultra Low Emission Zone have taken over London’s automotive landscape with worries about how the changes will impact drivers across the capital. Here’s what you need to know.
ULEZ – Ultra Low Emission Zone
The Ultra Low Emission Zone, or ULEZ, is London’s initiative to combat air pollution. Administered by Transport for London (TfL), it ensures vehicles meet emission standards, levying charges on those that don’t. While most commercial vehicles, buses, coaches, and mini-buses have their own London Emission Zone (LEZ) scheme, personal vehicles have to stay ULEZ compliant 24/7.

How Much is the ULEZ Charge?
For non-compliant vehicles, ULEZ costs £12.50 a day, and if left unpaid, a hefty penalty of up to £180 follows. But beware, driving into Central London might incur charges under both the Congestion Charge and ULEZ, so it’s crucial to plan your route wisely.
ULEZ Expansion Details
Announced by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in November 2022, ULEZ is set to expand beyond the North and South Circular roads, stretching to Greater London’s outskirts. Some regions even extend as far as the M25 orbital, making the new zone vast and all-encompassing.
This hasn’t gone without controversy. Several London borough councils didn’t take the ULEZ expansion announcement lightly. They believe the scheme might negatively impact their local economies and increase residents’ living costs. A court hearing in July 2023 discussed the Mayor’s overreach and concerns about the scrappage scheme’s clarity.
ULEZ Scrappage Scheme
To ease into the new ULEZ standards, TfL has introduced a scrappage scheme. Eligible candidates can get up to £2,000 for scrapping a non-compliant car. But, before rushing to scrap, it might be worthwhile to consider selling vehicles outside London, as the ULEZ effect might lower their value in and around the capital.
